Short-haul modems/line drivers?

This question is not specifically about terminals, but it's
the closest newsgroup I could find.

Do you have a recommended device (brand and/or supplier)
for connecting RS232 terminals/PC's that are more than a
few hundred feet from the host?

We have been using short-haul modems, but they cost $70
per end. I would like to find a cheaper way.

Thanks, Lee
