Quark style error

I'm having this problem with Quark 3.1. When i apply a style (for Body text 
which contains italics, bolds, etc.) to a chunk of text, Quark changes all of
the text to "plain" (no italics, no bold). this is very annoying. is there a way
to set a style to be neither plain nor italic nor bold but a little of each
(as the text demands)?
