Typesetting Codes -- How to Strip Them?

I recently had the fortune of getting a manuscript published -- that's the
good news.

The bad news is that, after having gone through a rather lengthy series of
editing passes, the only "finished" copy of the manuscript that I now have
in magnetic format also has *numerous* codes imbedded by the company that
prepared it for type. The company said that they would be happy to send
me a "clean" copy of the manuscript, but for a "modest" price. As a grad
student, I don't find $100 especially modest. It is my understanding that
all of this typesetting was done on a high-classed PC program, and that
the software they used to insert the codes will very easily strip them
right away. Any ideas what software they may have used, where to get it,
who else might have it, etc.? All of the codes are set into < >, but I don't
know how to interpret them, so I can't just do a search 'n' replace sort of
conversion.

E-mailed responses would be most appreciated!

Bill
