I've just started a new job, and the computer they gave me to work with is:
486-33, 16 megs RAM, networked to a HP LaserJet III, and a SCSI interface to
an HP ScanJet IIc (I think it is a IIc).  The scanner is a little wider than 
8.5 inches, and long enough to handle legal size documents. 

I'm using DeskScan II (the software that came with the scanner), and there 
is another program from ZSoft, photo imager, or something like that.   My
main job is programmer, but during lunch and breaks I have been playing with
the scanner.  My tests are using an 8x10 photo of a friend's baby, and using
a color magazine cover.

So far my results are not very impressive.  I got an excellent black and white
image of the baby, and playing with some of the settings (not knowing exactly
what I was doing) got it turn out very well with good shadows and such.

My attempts at color are entirely different.  Everything I've tried in color
turned out to be very grainy.  Almost as if it were 75dpi.  I have no
documentation, so RTFM is not an option.  :(  I'm sure there is a way to make
the image scan in color and look as good as the black and white one did, can
anyone help me?  

I will need to print these out, but first I need to worry about quality scans.

If you have any hints/tips/tricks/etc for the HP scanjet iic please let me
know...
