: This accords with what I have heard. A while ago I did some posting
: here about the quality of version 4.1, and I was wondering how
: you feel about it.
It seems to work. I hate the new "look" but fortunately figured out
how to get rid of the new buttons. Personally I wish Ventura had fixed
the bugs in version 2.0 that ran with GEM rather than keep changing the
user interface, adding new features and new bugs.
I make these comments as a person who doesn't want to even run MS-DOS and
has no real use for Microsoft Windows. I would prefer UNIX-based
products. The only stuff I run under MS-DOS are Ventura, Corel, HP
Scanner software and, as needed, Elvis (a vi clone). I would be happy to
move this stuff to a UNIX platform (PC-based or Sun) if the right tool
existed.
That said, I see Ventura as the right tool (and, based on my
understanding, FrameMaker isn't). What I really like about Ventura is the
fact that I can keep the pieces of a document in their original form
(ASCII text, MS-Word, etc). This is less important for some projects
(SSC's catalog, for example, is all ASCII and a non-problem) but for a
newsletter that I work on input comes from various people and the ability
to let them continue to edit with their favorite editor is very
important.
: On the other hand, I am *very* concerned that the publicity
: on Ventura is so bad that few new users are likely to begin
: with it. Ventura's overall market share, as reported in the trade
: press, has been dramatically shrinking. So I continue to be
: alarmed that I face becoming part of the orphaned product
: syndrome. In other words, should I re-energize to convert
: now, or be forced into it later?
I am currently involved with a group that is putting together a magazine.
This will probably be the thing that will force a new shopping trip.
About a year ago Ventura claimed that version 5 would run on Suns.
Unless there is something definite pointing this way in the next few
months I don't see Ventura as a reasonable answer anymore.
