I am a member of a sailing organization that needs to publish a
newsletter 3-4 per year. Currently, the newsletter is about 12-15
pages including fairly high quality b&w photos. Current mode of
operation is that someone composes the newsletter on a Macintosh,
leaves the appropriate spaces for the photos, creates a postscript
file and then takes the disk to a local printer who prints about
300 copies. The format of the newsletter is a 8 1/2 x 11 stapled
in the center magazine.

Our cost for printing is typically $900 per issue. Printing represents 70%
of our class budget.

I am looking for suggestions and recommendation on reducing costs.
Is taking the resulting postscript file to a printer the most cost
effective solution or should we change format slightly, buy a laser printer,
print and staple everything ourselves? How about scanning in
the photos?

Are there any organizations that are geared towards these kinds of small
newsletters?

We have some funds available for investing in new equipment, particularly
if we can save in the long run.
