I finally made the switch between Ventura (3.0) and PageMaker and I must
say the difference is dramatic in several respects.
* speed, first off. PageMaker under Windows is more than just a little
faster than Ventura
* size: two identical-looking documents, one in PageMaker, one
in Ventura, PageMaker is a larger /document/ file, but Ventura
by virtue of its creating duplicate images for internal consumption
uses up much, much more disk space.
* WYSIWYG: PageMaker Wins hands down.
* Accuracy, Precision. I haven't been able to evaluate this yet
but I don't think there will be a clear winner. In Ventura,
I could always specify with high accuracy where an element should
be, its size, margins, etc., to arbitrary precision (depending on
the units I chose to specify position in). PageMaker doesn't seem
to have the same (where can I type in exactly 15.4 mm for placement
of a guideline?) flexibility (where can I type in the exact size
of a line element?) I think this is my fault so far, and I'm sure
I'll find out how to do this soon. The joke is, of course, that
Ventura's output wasn't exactly what I had specified. I have 12
pages of photographic material, bled-to-edge, where I overlapped
images 5mm outisde of the page. The images were EPS files. The
output I got was images a random amount of space inside or outside
the page boundaries. So much for accuracy. I worked on another
project a week to get over-edge bleeding for a pattern-filled
EPS.
My only regret is that I didn't to all of this two months ago. What a drag!

To specify a guide that's 15.4 mm, change to cm in for your ruler measurement in the Preferences dialog box, turn on snap to rulers and then pull out a guide. You may have to increase the View to 200% to get the right ruler increments. jwhiting
