Securing XML (signature and encryption)
The XML encryption standard describes how to encrypt XML, but
when working in the dynamic web environment where encrypted
XML is sent to a user and the user is expected to return
encrypted XML, there is a kind of encryption ballet that has
to go on;
(a) the application extracts data from somewhere and prepares
it for the user: the XML is signed and encrypted under a key
available to the user
(b) the browser loads the XML: the XML is decrypted and signature
verified
(c) the browser submits XML back to the application, the XML is
signed and encrypted under a key(s) available to the application
(d) the application loads the XML, which it may or may not
decrypt (it might be stored encrypted), and signature is verified
