Steve Pepper recently mentioned here his posting explaining how to
use LINK to attach ICADD SDA attributes to existing DTDs without
having to modify the DTD, so now seems like a good time to make good
on my promise to him to say, in public, what I have already told him
in private.  Namely, that Steve's description is the first I have
seen of a worthwhile application of LINK to a real-world problem
which does not involve serious extension to LINK.  Steve has thus
met the challenge I have set two or three times on this list, to
try to persuade me that LINK can actually be used for some real
problem and is thus not a total loss.

My congratulations to him.

At the same time, I should point out that even this application
does not persuade me that LINK provides enough functionality to
justify its presence in 8879.  Everything LINK can do, the DSSSL
STTP (SGML tree transformation process) can do, and more.  I need
more study, but so far the DIS DSSSL looks very good indeed, in
both ideas and specification.
