The next meeting of the Washington Area SGML Users Group is
scheduled for Wednesday October 21, 1998 at the American
Geophysical Union (AGU) at 2000 Florida Avenuw, N.W.,
Washington, DC 20009-1277. The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m.
and usually lasts approximately 2 hours. If attending the
meeting by Metro, get off the Dupont Circle stop and walk
north to Florida Avenue...turn right.

IMPORTANT: The doors at AGU are locked afterhours. Someone
is at the door until 7:30 to let people in. If you arrive
after 7:30, please wait a few minutes and someone will check
the doors periodically.

OCTOBER AGENDA:

Mark Roberts, Infosphere

        Graphical Markup in SGML

Mr. Roberts and his team at InfoSphere have implemented a
series of architectures that may be used to store graphical
information in SGML. This implementation includes tools to
edit and display graphical data as well as tools to import
CGM (all levels) and then save that information in SGML.

Users benefit because a single document instance can contain
both text and graphics. The complete document, including graphic
content, can be validated with a standard SGML parser. Linking
structures commonly used in SGML can be used in a bi-directional
manner between all text and graphical elements. Further, search tools
are no longer restricted to simply the text content. User queries
can find information in both text and graphical elements.

Application developers benefit because graphical data becomes an
integral part of the SGML library. Without the use of hot-spot
overlays, graphical data can be used as navigation aids and quick
reference points for computer-based training, kiosk applications,
        and interactive electronic technical manuals.

Mr. Roberts will discuss the implementation of InfoSphere's Graphical
Elements and the relationship of his work to current efforts at the
W3C to produce a common vector graphics markup standard.
