        XML Network Services: Architectural Considerations

XML is quickly becoming the "lingua franca" for electronic
communications. Unfortunately, network infrastructure is blind
to XML traffic, leading to performance bottlenecks and security holes.

Organizations need to address the XML performance problem directly
at the network level, with technologies designed from the ground up
to deal with XML traffic. A new generation of XML-aware network
equipment is emerging. These solutions make it possible to manage,
process, secure and accelerate XML data streams.

	Big DOM and Little SAX

The Document Object Model (DOM) provides "a platform- and
language-neutral interface that allows programs and scripts to
dynamically access and update the content, structure and style
of documents." This talk focuses on the DOM as a generic
API for XML applications. After a brief re-cap of the SAX
approach, pros and cons of the DOM will be emphasized. A
high-level look at DOM's Node interface will be presented, as
well as the W3C's DOM Level 1, 2, and 3 efforts. Examples
will illustrate cross-browser and cross-language capabilities such as:

	- JavaScript to add nodes to an XHTML document
	- JavaScript to change style of an HTML page
	- JavaScript to dynamically update an SVG document
	- Microsoft VBscript DOM traversal of XML nodes
	- DOM Inspector in Mozilla
	- DOM traversal, filtering, node changing in Java
	- JDOM alternative (time-permitting)

Bio: Kenneth B. Sall is an XML consultant. He has sixteen
years experience in information technology, including
eight years of Web development. Sall was a key contributor to
the Astronomical Instrument Markup Language for NASA/Goddard
Space Flight Center. In addition, he maintains the XML
section of Web Developers Virtual Library (WDVL.Internet.com)
and has written many articles and spoken extensively on XML.
Sall provides XML overview and XML training courses, customized
to audience needs. He is the author of "XML Family of
Specifications: A Practical Guide", recently published by
	Addison-Wesley.
