Aesthetically-pleasing \baselineskip's

I am creating an \input file for myself, to
define various font sizes -- ninepoint,
tenpoint, etc. (Not that this hasn't
already been done by many people before.)

I know that typographic artists devote
quite a lot of time to structuring fonts
for maximum aesthetic appeal.

What I would like to know is whether, given
a font size, there is an "optimal"
\baselineskip for "single space" and
"double space" type. I can obviously adjust
the values until I get something which is
aesthetically pleasing to _me_. But is there
some sort of typographical standard?

Many thanks!
