I am using the LaTeX command \thanks in the titlepage of my document. Instead
of getting a star or other such symbol as shown in the LaTeX manual on page
164, I get an annoying numbered footnote on the title page. Is there a way to
rectify this ? The LaTeX manual does not seem to help.

I would appreciate any suggestions.
