How much anomalous space after math displays

After an eqnarray or similar environment, there is often vertical space
appearing for no good reason. I have searched the latex macros for eqnarray,
and there is no justification for this at all. It seems to appear from the $$
which ends display math mode. The Latex book (Lamport) acknowledges that this
space appears, and suggests that it can be removed by adding negative vertical
space. So the question on everybody's lips is "how much vertical space"?
If anyone has any clues, please let me know. Thanks,
