Help: Illustrator doesn't see embedded TeX fonts in PDFLATEX PDF files.

I create PDF files using PDFLATEX. Acrobat reader views these files fine, and
I look at the font list, and it shows that the TeX fonts are embedded. But
Illustrator can't see them. It says Missing Type 1 fonts, reencoding foreign
fonts, which of course makes the output look awful. I've tried this on both
PC and mac platforms, and created the PDF files on several different TeX
configurations. How can I install the fonts on a PC so that Illustrator
knows about them? Thanks.

I don't know what Illustrator's problem is but you might want to
experiment with using another font family. For example, try

\usepackage{palatino}

or, if you use math,

\usepackage{mathpazo}

in your preable.

This might confirm that it is really the "TeX fonts" (presumably
Computer Modern) that are problematic.

Hi Mark

There is a well-known problem with
Illustrator/TeX Type 1 fonts -- it crops
up on the comp.text.tex newsgroup.
The root cause is, in my experience, because
the TeX Type 1 fonts use characters in the
0--31 region -- which Illustrator cannot
cope with, it seems.

I ran into this Illustrator problem using
MetaPost -- MetaPost's PostScript
is quite simple and without any TeX fonts
Illustrator opens/parses it just fine.
Once you add text to the MetaPost graphics
Illustrator cannot open it properly -- it does
open/parse the code but completely screws the text.

There are some TeX virtual fonts which are
designed to deal with this Illustrator problem
but I've never used them. Ask on comp.text.tex.

Another, messy, workaround is to manually reencode the
PFB files to remove (remap) the characters in
the 0--31 region to higher positions in the encoding
vector. You also need to create new PFMs. I did this
to fix my MetaPost problem and it worked -- I
could open MetaPost .eps in Illustrator and see the
maths/text. I also had to fix the MetaPost PostScript
to remap the character strings. Altogether horrendous
and not really recommended.

Regards

Graham

Hi Graham

Isn't there a possibility to just convert the pfm and pfb files of the
CM-fonts to TrueType, or something Illustrator understands, and if
there is which tools must I use ?

Best Regards
