Generating a landscape page within a portrait document

Hi!,

  I was wondering whether somebody might be able to tell me how I can generate a
landscape table (and hence insert a landscape page) while the remainder of the
document remains in portrait. I presume it is just a matter of creating a
mini-environment in which the table exists and then closing the environment.

  The problem is, that I don't know how to create a mini-page environment which
is setup for landscape. I know how to put an entire document into landscape,
but I am not sure how to do it for an environment.

Can anyone offer any suggestions ??

Thanks!

Dean Thompson

Hi Dean,

I deal with this feature frequently. Indeed, like you say, this is just a matter of
environment with the lscape package:

\usepackage{lscape}

[...]

\begin{landscape}
\begin{table}[htbp]

your table

\end{table}
\end{landscape}

That's it! I sometimes get tables too large too fit in a single
page. Other than playing with margins and/or fontsize only for this
specific page, my suggestion is the following:

1) Create your table on a single document with the same code as the
aforementioned;

2) Generate a table.EPS file from it;

3) Include your table.EPS in your original document with the graphicx
package and the proper syntax.

Using this way, you'll be able to scale your table to fit exactly the
paper sizes and its margins, to crop it and so on... with a nicer visual
result than that from changing the fontsize (I once had a table that would
fit in my page if and only if the tiny size was used because the
footnote size was too large!).

Good luck.

/NB

Hi

I'm having trouble using the lscape package inside a portrait document. The
landscaped page is "shifted" upwards and the upper part of the page is clipped. When
I put the landscaped table in a document by itself (using the same preamble as the
original one) the table comes out fine.

Anybody know why this is happening and how to fix it?.

Thanks in advance.

You can use "lscape" package. It defines the environment {landscape}.
Inside it you have all, but in landscape mode.

I hope it works fine for you ;-)

Dean,
    When I needed create a sideways (landscape) table in a portrait-oriented
document (my Ph.D. thesis), I used the package "rotating" with the
"beginsidewaystable" or "beginsidewaysfigure" environments. Works perfectly, so
long as I am interested in using the -whole- page, which I am.

    By the way, does anyone know why my LaTeX installation should -refuse- to
generate landscape output when I use the command:

            \documentclass[12pt, twocolumn, landscape]{article}

I can't get it to work for the life of me, and I'm stumped.
