dvips problem (I think)

Hi,
after I upgraded dvips from version 5.516 to 5.54, all german umlauts in
the texts have gone when using PostScript fonts....

configuration: emtex 3c-beta11 (tex 3.1415), NFSS-1 (!), german.sty
2.4a, dvips5.54 (the only change to previous configuration), GhostScript
2.6.1

unchanged TeX files compile fine (of course, nothing has changed), dvips
works, but the printout has no umlauts, just the base character, the \ss
is replaced by a space.
I suppose that one of the upgraded files coming with dvips (*.sty,
psfonts.map?) has changed in a way that another (incorrect in this case)
font encoding scheme is used for the PS fonts (happens with normal fonts
as Bookman as well as URW-Fonts), everything is ok for generic TeX fonts
(cmr, cconcrete...).

Any suggestions?

                    Christian
