The TeX drivers purchased from Textset in Ann Arbor make extensive use of
\special to include graphics that are in PostScript form, to control the
laserprinter, and to greatly enhance the picture drawing environment in
LaTeX. We are using Suns; the Textset previewer displays the page without
the PostScript stuff. The tape has prologue files that let you include
graphics from MacDraw, MacDraft, etc. A program written here makes
PostScript from physics program graphical output made on mainframes.
They also include font metric tables for Adobe Postscript fonts;
this GREATLY speeds up printing when not using the standard 10pt fonts,
e.g. when making viewgraphs.

Unless you have a lot of time, or highly-skilled cheap labor, check
Textset (now called Arbortext, or somesuch).
