\eqalign is based on \halign, which constructs general alignments.  Every
field in an alignment is implicitly placed in its own group; that is, a line
like:

	a & b & c \\

acts more or less as if you had written

	{a} & {b} & {c} \\

\left and \right act as grouping characters, and the grouping they imply must
not conflict with that of any (implicit or explicit) "curly" groups.

So...what you want to do won't work.  \left and \right are labor-saving de-
vices which help out much of the time, but they are by no means universal.
This is one case in which you have to fall back on the simpler \biggl and
friends.
