Using METAFONT (?)

Let me preface this with an apology for using the net bandwidth for what
seems such a simple question, but I have tried to figure out on my own
and looked in the Metafont book ...

I finally got metafont up and running on my 3b1, a feat of which I am proud,
and now all I want to do is use the standard cm*.mf files to generate
the .tfm and .xxxpk fonts. All I get are .xxxgf fonts instead. I can't
find any documentation anywhere -- not even a man page. Can anyone point
me to any kind of simple users guide for using mf? Or even just
tell me what to do to get my various .pk fonts?

Thanks. Sorry again.
