I am using refer (grefer) with numbering format. So if a reference
is at the end of the sentence, I need to put a period (.)right after
the citation. I cannot put it right after ".]" since it will make
the number not to be superscipt. I need to putt he period at the
beginning of next line.
But troff treats every line starts with "." as a command line and this
line will be ignored. I tried several possible ways and the only
woprk around I have now is to put "\ " in front of the period. But
that introduices an extra space between the citation of the period.
Does anyone know how to do it?
Thanks.

Simply insert "\&" (null size character) before ".":
