List members,
We are looking at providing a campus mailer where a user may have their mail
addressed to "user-id@calpoly.edu". The mail would arrive at that machine and
then be forwarded to the user's actual machine based upon a mechanism such as a
mail alias. We have been looking forward to X.500, but it looks like this will
take a while before we have access to a supportable product.
So in the meantime, we are looking for a package that could:
A. Maintain mail aliases for upwards of 15-20,000 students, faculty, and
staff at the university. (We current have 9,400 accounts on one of our
UNIX systems alone, let alone other UNIX, VM, and LAN based systems.)
B. Allow access to the information on a read only basis via such devices as
"finger" and / or "gopher". Queries based on fields is desirable.
C. Allow for automated user requests for and processing of registering their
alias for a target machine elsewhere on the network.
D. Allow for batch upgrades of aliases by an authorized user(s). this could
be system administrators, department managers or secretaries, or other
authorized personnel.
E. Store lots of important information and make available for query such as
name, address, phone, office, office phone, office hours, department,
e-mail address, year in school, and whatever other fields may be
appropriate for a university environment.
This software would ideally run on an HP-9000 system running HP/UX.
