Dumb question/solution time.  I'd try the following (you may have already
done most of these, hence the "dumb" part), booting in between, in roughly
this order:

-scandisk
-boot with a minimal CONFIG.SYS/AUTOEXEC.BAT
-reinstall DOS
-make a backup copy of SYSTEM.INI then edit it, looking for any obvious
-problems in the BOOT, BOOT DESCRIPTION or NETWORK sections.  If     
nothing obvious is located, disable networking from SYSTEM.INI or CONTROL 
PANEL/NETWORK.
-remove the NIC
-reinstall WFWG
