If you buy a Japanese OS you will save yourself quite a lot of trouble. Of
course it is not always an option (you don't have a Japanese version or it's
expensive or delivery takes a long time or you want to keep most of your
environment English etc...).

In the office I am using WinNT4, Outlook2K and Japanese IME. And some Japanese
fonts. Works generally OK.

At home I have a Japanese Win98SE. I have bought some computer parts (PC-card
adapter, CD-RW, Firewire card,...) in Japan and in an English Win98 the Japanese
texts (setup, applications, menus) would be unreadable. Since the system is 99%
Japanese there are generally no problems.

I also have Red Hat Linux 7.1 that came with a Japanese Linux magazine.
Basically Japanese output works and input doesn't.

Sorry I don't have experience on Outlook Express+English Windows+Japanese.

* When you send a Japanese mail from an English Outlook2K you have to select
HTML or Rich Text as the format.
* If I remember correctly, with Outlook98 only HTML format works.
* (At least in most cases) Windows will happily let you write Japanese even if
the mail encoding is set to Western. So remember to set the encoding correctly.
* From a Japanese computer it seems to be possible to send Plain Text mail in
Japanese. Outlook will let you reply to such mail but it will not let you use
Japanese input.
* One simple test you can do is write the mail, Save it and try to open it from
the Drafts folder. I have noticed that when the settings are not correct, in the
worst case, the mail is already unreadable without sending it.
* About the encoding...I am using Format>Encoding...Japanese(JIS) when I mail to
my wife. I am not sure if that is the best choice but since it works I don't
want to change it...
* I was going to check the 7/8bit, MIME, base64 or whatever settings for you too
but it seems that Outlook2K hides that from the user.
