Flaky Comm Port & Sportster Vi... PLEASE HELP ME!!

Hi and thanks for reading this.

I recently purchased a Pentium 166 (clone) with 32M Ram, EIDE 1.6G
Maxtor and a Toshiba Quad (connected to the 2nd EIDE connector on the
MB, Chipset is a triton (I believe).

Anyway, the MB has a 16550 UART built into it (apparently and system
diagnostics confirm that there is a 16550) that I'm using with a new
external Sportster Vi. The modem works fine when physically connected
to my home computer (a dx2/66). However when I use it on the P166, I
have all sorts of problems. I can usually connect at high speed to
BBS's. However running host mode of Wincomm, I am sometimes unable to
connect to it from home (with an older 28,8 sportster that is
reliable) and sometimes with no problems.

I have as yet been unable to use laplink 95 in either host or as a
remote at all. When dialing in or out, the modem connects at 2400 and
then (within a minute disconnect). - I have also tried to connect to a
friends Laplink machine who is using a Supra of some kind with the
same results. These machines however work fine otherwise, so I am
convinced that the problem lies with the P166.

To dial out of work (where the P166 is) I have to dial 9 and then , ,
to get an outside line. Could this be the problem? I doubt it as other
modems at work seem OK, though they are all 14,400s. Additionally, I
have to do the same thing with a terminal such as Wincomm or Procomm
and they are all OK (usually)

I have checked and rechecked all of Win95 settings and tried disabling
the 16550 UART, changing the port speed (all setting from 19,2 to
115K), trying various modems as well as downloading the latest drivers
for the Vi from the USR BBS. Also, I have re-installed the modem
several times and also re-instlled laplink several times and tried
changing any parameters that I though might be relevant.

Bottom line is that usually a terminal like Wincomm will work but a
remote control or file transfer app like laplink won't work (ever).
All of this software is BTW, working on my other machines and I didn't
do anything out of the ordinary when installing them on the P166

Nothing seems to help. Does this sound like a hardware problem? In
addition to Laplink for 95, I've also tried PC Anywhere, Close-Up 6,
and Laplink for DOS. None worked though the Wincomm app (usually) is
OK.

HMMMMMM, I'm out of ideas. Can anyone suggest a solution? I assume
that the 16550 chip is hardwired into the MB (I think that it is a
Gigabyte (?) - the manual is at work)

Any advise would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Frank

I have some suggestions. Try to run a loopback on the serial port(s).
Also maybe try to use the other serial port on the system if you think
the system is the problem. Also check your CMOS setup to verify the
ports are using standard settings for COM1 (3F8 IRQ4) and COM2 (2F8
IRQ3).

Good Luck, Greg
