Modifying metafiles - how?????

The Windows Programmer's Reference says (in section 2.14.2) that GetMetaFile
"opens a metafile stored in a disk file and makes it available for replay
or modification." As far as I can find, that's the only hint in the book
that once you call CloseMetaFile the metafile isn't written in stone,
forever unmodifiable.

Can anyone tell me how to re-open a metafile, so that I can append some more
graphics operations to it?

Thanks in advance. Please reply either by email or by posting; I'll summarize
email responses if there's any interest.
