Database engines for Windows - Responses

#501

The following are the responses I received from my inquiry into Windows
database engines.

In addition to the following response -
Paradox will be releasing an update to their engine with will support the
enhanced Paradox 4.0 file format. This release is suppose to be in October.

Raima has two new versions of its database engine out - Data Manager, which
is a network model with an optional relational front end - and Object
Manager, which is a persistant storage mechanism for OOP.

Hope someone finds this information useful. Thanks to all who responded to
my request.

Try CodeBase It meets all your wants... but they say to use LARGE memory model
If you have questions about it, e-mail me directly

No answers, unfortunately. I'm just looking for a database engine,
myself, so would be more than interested in whatever answers you
receive...

Well, I will throw one more name into the hat, I guess. FoxPro does
provide a db engine with their db software.

Sean.

   . Redistributable DLL, royalty free.
   . Prefer medium model.
   . Reasonably good support.
. Prefer file format compatible with commercial database tools.

I just bought CodeBase 2.5 (?) so I'm not yet an expert with it. It
seems to meet all of your requirements except that they prefer large
model. Source code is provided, however, so you could recompile
depending on how it is coded. A nice feature is that they include
CodeWindows, a subroutine library of data entry interface under
windows. They support DBase formats as well as Foxbase and others.
They also have a BBS and telephone support. The street price is
around $250. I would have to say that the documentation is a little
lacking. It is more of a reference guide with some examples. I would
have liked to see seom sort of overview tutorial with philosophy of
writing database programs. They do have a few tutorials but they are
trivial. The CodeWindows manual is similar but has a few more
tutorials. I would have appreciated some more hand holding from the
tutorial. I am new to both Windows coding and Database coding. It
took me some time to realize I had to copy the DLL into the windows
directory to make the software work. The makefiles provided for the
examples didn't work until I added the paths for the CodeBase
includes, this could have been done at the factory. Also, the test
programs they included take alot of disk space. I bought Microsoft
C/C++ 7.0 so I don't have much room to spare. I would have liked to
see their test code check for disk space requirements it runs. The
errors it returned were not intuitive. My overall recommendation is
that it is a worthwhile package with a well written reference manual
but poor tutorial.

Warren, we are looking for this info as well. Currently we are leaning
toward Codebase 4.5 as it comes with source and claims no royalties.
We would sure appreciate any comments regarding any limitations or
ortherwise comments if you have them. Thanx in advance Terry Rudersdorfer

I've used the Paradox Engine. It meets the first requirement, the third and
the fourth. I've never had a need to use the technical support, but I know
it's there, and is probably about the same as the rest of Borland's.

It's slower than Paradox 3.5, but it's somewhat easy to use. It's really
basic, and gives you access to the low level database, itself, but not the
forms, reports, etc, that are attached to a table.

I also understand that with the new version of Paradox, they'll be releasing
a new version of the Engine later this year. I haven't heard anything about
it, except that they're going to, but I'd imagine it's sped up some.

I'm using the latest version, 2.0...

Any other questions I may be able to answer for you, please feel free to
E-Mail me.
