I have several questions about the best approach to developing 32 bit image processing applications to the MSDOS environment. Perhaps some people in this newsgroup could provide some advice which would help our efforts. I have come into the possession of the 32 bit compiler MetaWare High C 1.7 (with debugger) and the 32 bit dos extender PharLap 386|ASM/LINK 2.2b -- do these packages operate well under DESQview? The documentation says the MetaWare and PharLap products conform to the VCPI standard. Of course, I am interested in using these two products in part because their list price suggests they must be more or less valuable. MetaWare lists for $1995 and PharLap lists for $495. I understand there is another free 32 bit compiler called DJGPP and 32 bit dos extender GO32 which at one time did not run under DESQview and now are capable of running under DESQview. Where can I acquire current copies of DJGPP and GO32? Has this compiler been updated to incorporate the GCC 2.0 updates? Stallman says GCC 2.0 has substantially improved floating point performance enhamcements for 386 PC's. Is there a 387 emulator available for use with DJGPP generated binaries on 386 PC's absent 387 coprocessors? Has anyone used DJGPP for generating code to burn into EPROMs for embedded applications? If so, are there public domain or shareware tools for '386 embedded application development (embedded code linkers, real time os, or remote symbolic debuggers)? I have an ATI Graphics Vantage (noninterlaces emulation of an 8514/a card) in my PC. I'd like to be able to use it in the 1024x768 pixel x 256 color mode under DESQview. Is there any support in DESQview or other available library for the 8514/a graphics environment? What do people do in general for high resolution video drivers under DESQview? The shrink wrap package for DESQview at Fry's Market doesn't say anything about hi res video cards. Does anyone have any experience with compatibility of MetaWare, PharLap, DJGPP, or GO32 with MS Windows 3.0/3.1? I have been writing 16 bit code using MS C 6.0 and the Windows 3.0 SDK -- but I'd like to get away from 64K segments and work with a flat memory model. This would facilitate porting a large number of free image processing and utility codes from the unix environment to the DOS environment. Finally, does anyone know whether SUN's PC-NFS product is compatible with DESQview? It seems to run without problems under MW Windows 3.0. Please, if you have any experience with these products -- do provide some initial pointers or summaries of your experience to assist our projects. There is already a free port of 32-bit GCC, and several compiler vendors are either already released or going to release soon 32-bit flat memory model c & c++ compilers.
