In order to protect myself from becoming obsolete, I've decided to add a couple of skills to the ol' resume. I would consider myself a fairly capable C programmer. I spend most of my time programming DOS apps, DOS games, and software that runs under a realtime kernal on an embedded system. I have learned a _little_ about C++ programming (basic syntax, etc). I'm looking for a few tips from others who have moved to Windows-based C++ coding (recommended books, documents, etc). I have good design skills (modularity, etc), but I need a better idea of how and where to use objects. I have some experience with realtime systems, but I also need an idea of how to move from linear programming to structuring code around window's message loop thingamajig. Both the move to C++ and Windows will require big changes to the way I structure my code, and I am hoping that there is some book that will help me learn both simultaneously. Or could that overload my brain? We use borland 3.1 and 4.0 at work, but I was thinking of grabbing VC++ 2.2, so I could do win95 stuff. However, I've heard that Microsoft has started on VC++ 3.0. Any dates/info on it? Any help with be greatly appreciated. kirk.bratvold@deepcove.com

I am currently in the throes of moving from DOS to Windows myself. I have found the Microsoft Systems Journal to be a invaluable help. It is a monthly magazine, about $5 (although you can subscribe for about $2.50). As far as books go, Charles Petzold's Programming Windows 3.1 is very useful and fairly basic. If you're going for Windows 95, though, there may be better texts available. >I have some experience with realtime systems, but I also need an idea of >how to move from linear programming to structuring code around window's >message loop thingamajig. The last few months of MSJ (Microsoft Systems Journal) have been sort of a primer series by Jeff Prosise. These were (I think) MSJ June thru Sept 1995. There was another VERY good article about the messaging system in about the August issue, I think. >We use borland 3.1 and 4.0 at work, but I was thinking of grabbing VC++ >2.2, so I could do win95 stuff. Since the MFC (Microsoft Foundation Classes) library was version 3.2 for VC++ 2.2, Microsoft decided to promote them both to 4.0 so that it would be easier to keep track of the version numbers. If you get any information from others, please CC: me a copy - I'm still learning too! Thanks.
