I am trying to use the help engine for building a hypertext application. There seems to be two problems with doing this: 1) the help engine is shared, so if the user requests help from another application, the text displayed in my application's help window is replaced by the other application's help info; 2) I'd like to be able to query the help engine -- for example, to determine what topic is currently displayed (being able to do this may solve problem 1). An ideal alternative would be a private (to my application) copy of the help engine. I've tried executing a copy of winhelp.exe, but Windows lets other applications share that one as well. If there was some way of running winhelp.exe without Windows knowing it was another copy of the help engine, my problems might be licked. If someone has done what I basically want to do, please reply via email (use the address below). Any suggestions are welcome. Please reply to comeau@crc.sofkin.ca.
