Okay, here goes. It seems this questions pops up in every newsgroup I
   read. There is a general sound utility called SOX that converts
   between an impressive array of formats, including AU and WAV (and
   VOC and SND and...). It runs on several platforms; the source has
   been posted some time ago on alt.sources. There is a compiled,
   ready-to-use DOS version at garbo.uwasa.fi, file
   pc/sound/sox4d.zip. It works really well.

No, I don't owe SOX anything except a lot of satisfaction. SOX is
   maintained by Lance Norskog (thinman@netcom.com - hope the address
   is still right) to whom I bow. Try the program out, and if you need
   more info, contact Lance (but don't flood him with mail either :-)
