I tried to send this directly to Liam [lee@sqlee.sq.com (Liam R. E.
Quin)] but it bounced back twice. Sorry for the bandwith loss...

Actually there might be some confusion here. There are two banners
involved. In general one can start xnews with -banner and get the
full screen OW screen (with full screen blue background). However the
default is -nobanner and one will get the X "weavy" background.
Unfortunately even in this situation one gets the small OW logo on the
middle of the screen.

I wandered through the /usr/openwin/etc/NeWS/{init,paintroot}.ps code
and there does not seem to be a way to get rid of this smaller logo
(which is irritating because only a small farction of it shows up
under the xdm login window...

Oh well, Liam, thanks for your help anyway...

The correct reply address is lee@sq.com; sorry.

You can redefine init.ps and paintroot.ps (they normally go in $HOME/NeWS,
but you could edit the ones in $OPENWINHOME/share/etc/NeWS if you were
very careful... :-)

The following versions will start OW3 up with neither `banner'.

A better solution would be to move the small banner out of the way of the xdm
screen, or to move the xdm screen (with .x and .y resources, probably) so
it doesn't hide the OpenWindows logo. Since the logo is only there for 5
seconds, I don't see that it matters all that much, but still...

is there a way to change the color of the 'weavy' background though?
