Everything seems to work fine after this, but I never had this happen
under Solaris 2.0 and OpenWindows 3.0.1. What does this mean? Where is
Don Hopkins when you need him?

I got similar error messages. They were cause by my .startup.ps:
shareddict /PaintRootDict get begin
%
% the following line deletes the banner from startup
%
/InitPaintRoot { } def
end
I removed the startup.ps file and al is well. (Except taht I get the
Solaris greeting banner every time).

About the banner thing. Run openwin -banner. That banner is just a bit too much. :-) Rob Kroeger CGL University of Waterloo .

>That banner is just a bit too much. :-) Yeah, I expect the machine to play a sound file of Joel Grey singing every time it comes up. :-)
