Detecting X windows capabilities

Currently I've got a .login csh script running and I want to
detect if a user remoting logging in has X windows capabilities.
Right now my using:

xwininfo -root -display <remote host window>

This works fine when the remote machine is running X windows but
if it isn't then is has a tendency to just sit there waiting.
Is there some way I can set up a timeout or is their another
routine I can use?
