I am trying to get an application written with System 5 curses
(on SunOS 4.1.1 if that counts) to run with mixed japanese and
english language strings on kterm (version 5.1.0).

I've added the escape sequences to terminfo that tell kterm to
go into or out of Kana mode, and kterm almost always does the
right thing, but sometimes it doesn't switch back out of Kana
before writing an english string.

If you have any experience (good or bad) in getting kterm to
work with curses, let me know.
