You don't have to use CDE/dtlogin and all that dubious non-standard
software. Just stick with using straight X-windows. Solaris 2.6 and up has
Openwindows based on X11R6, and Solaris 8 has Openwindows based on X11R6.4,
so there's even less reason to use CDE instead of real X.

You can make OpenWindows start up automatically at boot time by changing the
permissions on /usr/openwin/xdm so it can be executed (chmod it to 0755),
and adding two lines to /etc/inittab to start up xdm (the X display manager)
and xfs (the X font server) at boot time:

xfs:34:once:/usr/openwin/bin/xfs
xdm:34:once:/usr/openwin/bin/xdm

xdm's configuration files are in /usr/openwin/X11/xdm, and you can customise
them to suit.

The two you'll need to look at the most are 'xdm-config' (xdm's main
configuration file), 'Xresources' (the main X resource file used by xdm).

It's not recommended to log in as root via any sort of graphical
environment, but in the home directory of the user account you'll use (be it
the root account or not) you will need to set up a '.xsession' file if you
don't want to use the default session layout which is described in the
'Xsession' file in the xdm config directory.

Openwindows uses twm (Tom's Window Manager) as the default window manager
application (instead of that silly fvwm which is Motif-based and therefore
very top-heavy), so you can create a '.twmrc' file in your home directory to
control how twm manages your display after you've logged in via xdm's login
screen.

Regards,

Craig.
