We are trying to put together a "standard desktop environment" for a number of writers and editors. The basis will be Sparcs running SunOS 4.1, X11R5, and the Motif Window Manager (mwm). Besides an important application tool, all these users need to: * do UNIX command-line work as in xterm or cmdtool * edit ASCII documents as in xedit or textedit * read copious email * read net news These are not naive users; indeed most would qualify as power users from the standpoint of text editing and the use of email and shell commands. However (and this is a key point) none are programmers. For example few if any would be able to read a makefile or hack a shell script other than .login/.cshrc (some couldn't do that much). The desktop tools we've assembled so far are rather a mixed bag including some X contributed programs, some Sun stuff (like mailtool out of sunview via openwin), etc. There are quite noticeable inconsistencies between tools in the treatment of mouse selections, keyboard focus, and the like, as well as outright bugs. There are probably publishers of professional-quality tools of these sorts for Motif, yes? Where do they advertise? How do we find out about them? And does anyone have suggestions or experiences with commercial software to share? Please write; I'll be glad to post a summary of what I get. Dave Cortesi cortesi@informix.com

They produce a full distribution of MOTIF and X.desktop for SUN. In addition they have a set of goodies under the title Deskterm which provide editor, post it notes, calculator etc. IXI have distributors world wide. >Dave Cortesi > cortesi@informix.com -- Fred Weil Unix Rules OK
