SunPHIGS 2.0 on mono workround

I have recently been informed of a workround to the `SunPHIGS 2.0
on monochrome workstations' problem. SunPHIGS runs on top of XGL,
Sun's low-level graphics library, which enables PHIGS to make
best use of the hardware available. Apparently setting the
environment variable xgl_device to xlib will enable SunPHIGS
to run on mono screens.

I have tried

setenv xgl_device xlib
setenv XGL_DEVICE xlib
setenv XGLDEVICE xlib

but still get the XGL error when trying to draw anything in the
PHIGS workstation on a mono screen.

Does anybody out there know anything about this `workround'?
I would really like to find out more about the `XGL device' environment
variable but unfortunately I have no access to the XGL documentation.
Can anyone help, please?

Many thanks in advance,
Gareth.
