Three questions: What architectures does the PEX sample implementation (X11R5) support? (Perhaps there is a file somewhere that answers this, and you could direct me to it.) Is anyone aware of any commercial X servers that support PEX? Is there any way to add the PEX extentions to my X11R4 X server using the -x option? The machine is an SGI Iris running IRIX 4.0.5F, the X server is from SGI, the -x option is documented in the man page. Any help in answering these questions will be appreciated.

Lots. the MIT sample implementation is software only, so it is more appropriate to ask what unix it supports. We have built it here on SGI, DEC, Sun, IBM, Omron boxes. I know it also builds on Data General, E&S, and at least a few others I may be forgetting... The sample implementation does not provide support for hardware accelerators. >Is anyone aware of any commercial X servers that support PEX? There are many commercial implementations. I run the MIT Sample Implementation here on an SGI only because SGI Has donated proprietary code. We can not distribute this code unfortunately. In theory if you had the correct proprietary support from SGI you could run PEX on X11R4 servers. I believe some of the commercially available PEX implementations are based on X11R4 servers. In theory, the PEX-SI supports all architectures. This is because the device-dependent layer of the PEX sample implementation (ddpex) is layered on top of the device-dependent layer of core X (ddx). This is also why the PEX-SI isn't as fast as it could be; on the other hand it is the least common denominator approach to the implementation. >Is anyone aware of any commercial X servers that support PEX? E&S' X server supports PEX; other vendors that support PEX are: Sun Microsytems, Hewlett Packard, DEC, IBM, Tektronix, ShoGraphics, and NCD. >Is there any way to add the PEX extentions to my X11R4 X server using the -x >option? I don't think SGI supports PEX yet, or provides it in the servers that they release to their customers. -- Rich -- Don't blame me; I voted Libertarian Disclaimer: I speak for myself, except as noted; Copyright 1992 Rich Thomson UUCP: ...!uunet!dsd.es.com!rthomson Rich Thomson Internet: rthomson@dsd.es.com IRC: _Rich_ PEXt Programmer
