Tvtwm uses the concept of a virtual desktop, that is larger than the
(physical) screen. What you see is really a part of the desktop.
You can move your window on the desktop. Windows can be configured to
stick (i.e. always appear on your screen, no matter how the desktop is
mapped).
Ctwm uses the concept of workspaces: the desktop is what you see in
your window, but you can have multiple desktops. With a nice button
panel you can switch between workspaces. Windows can be configured to
stick (like tvtwm), or to appear in one or more workspaces.
Which is better depends on what you want. If you need a big desktop
and do not mind scrolling all of the time, tvtwm is what you need. If
you want to organize your work by using multiple desktops for
different purposes, ctwm is best.
I have been very happy with tvtwm for years, but I used it to organize
my work by dividing the big desktop in smaller parts and switching
between these parts. This is precisely what the workspace concept of
ctwm does, so I switched to ctwm when it came out.
BTW: The concept of workspaces is not new. It has been inplemented in
several 'rooms' type packages. As far as I known, only the HP window
manager and GWM have implemented it in the window manager (where it
belongs). And ctwm, of course.
