You're probably right that the R6.3 Xserver code doesn't know about any of
Sun's PCI framebuffers. The only framebuffers I know that are supported on
recent-model Sparcstations are the cg3's, cg6's (aka GX, GX+, TGX and TGX+),
and the TCX frame buffer found on SS-10's.

There's no working 24-bit framebuffer support either, so Xsun24 won't work
with any current 24-bit framebuffers. For example, to use the 24-bit SX
framebuffers in SS-20's, you've got to use Sun's Xserver.

I've been down this road myself since I currently run X11R6(.x) on this box
(a Sparc LX) and previously on other desktop Sparc boxes.

When I upgrade to SunOS 5.6 in the next few weeks I'll still not use
OpenWindows per-se, but I will use Sun's X libraries and Xserver since they
are now R6-based, so nearly all my existing X applications will be easy to
get working again.
