What I didn't write, ( *flame on* ) but should have written (ok,ok I'm allergic
to large posts ), was that the application is a graphics demo for the networked
machines in the CS department here; all of these machines use the same file
server; you can login to any of them with the same username/password.....

You are to correct to question this idea; I did so myself. But in the
case of the networked machines here, I'm logged into hunter-10; the
name of the display is hunter-10:0.0; and so on for hunter-09, etc.
None of the machines have more than one display ( that I know of, anyway )
Since my app. is unlikely to be ported ( very unlikely ), this might ( covers
his ass ) be a safe thing to do ?? This a graphics demo for twerps; none of
them are going to try run it on a display connected to a machine outside this
department.... they are liable to try something like % demo -display <machine>.
I'm attempting to at least try to do what someone with no X knowledge
whatsoever ( some may claim thats me as well - I might agree ) expects the
package to do, based on the machine setup here.

This may be slightly more acceptable, given the above ? I don't deny any of
the criticisms levelled at the above idea, I just think they are possibly
less terrible given the local setup...

In future I'll put more detail in my posts ( to save my ego ).

Allan.
