The tool you are looking for is called 'ncftp'
Sorry, it's not X-based, but it can continue a download after a disconnect.

Hm, you seem to have a bad line.  My PPP-Modem line and my ISDN line NEVER
disconnected!  Maybe there's something wrong with your provider.
Or your phone-company.
