> I went to Fry's to buy a monitor for my new system. The monitor > was $799 and I was going to write a check for it. I get up > to the cashier, he rings up the monitor and I start to write > my check. The guy tells me that they are going to have to call > the bank to verify the check. Oh I forgot to mention that it > is Sunday Afternoon. Haven't they ever heard of TeleCheck? This could be your banks fault. My "bank" (Thrift) for some reason can't have checks verified other than at business hours so I get checks refused when I try to write checks after business hours. > After they verify the check, this takes about 15 minutes, the > cashier says they need to "photocopy" my drivers license also. > I flat out refuse stating that they have already copied the > number on the check. After about 10minutes of arguing with the > moron, I ask to see the manager. The manager tells me that > it is company policy to photocopy a persons Drivers License > whenever they receive a check for more than $100 Dollars. > I still refuse to allow a photocopy of my Drivers License. > After another 20 minutes of arguing rather loudly the manager > threatens to have me booted from the store if I do not calm > down. I then ask for my check back and the photocopy they > made of it. The manager then backed off about demanding the > photocopy of my Drivers License and stated that if he could > look at it that would be fine. I comply, show him my DL and > am out of there with my monitor. I guess company policy is > up to the manager's discretion. Yes!, at just about anywhere. > If I had used a credit card I would have been out of there in > a few minutes. > > My question is: Is it legal for them to photocopy your Drivers > License? Unfortunately, yes. But no business is allowed to discriminate inspite of what the signs say; so they're not allowed to pick on you. Did they accept your check without verification?; that's more congenial than happens to me. -- Cheers!
