There is a stark contrast between the image officials in Seaside would like us to see and the reality there. Here are examples of the family orientation in Seaside -A retired couple savagely stabbed to death in their motel room. -Two people executed on the beach for no particular reason -An elderly woman killed in her home (one of the first convictions using DNA) -A woman murdered and dumped on the outskirts of town -Another woman strangled in her home. The list goes on..... Most of these crimes were committed during the last decade. During the same period Cannon Beach and Gearhart experienced nothing comparable. Why Seaside? The answer is simple. Seaside is run by people who will do anything to keep urban recreation dollars flowing into town. Anyting except sacrifice short-term profits for long-term solutions. A person can sit along Seaside's promenade most warm evenings and observe many types of illegal activity, not the least being alcohol consumption by minors. Does Seaside do anything about it? No, the unofficial policy is to turn a blind eye - if you don't have official records, the existense of these problems can be denied. As Seaside merchants and officials weave a cash green tapestry, the blood stains on the social fabric cannot be washed away. Years ago a prominent local boy was stopped for driving under the influence in Seaside. It was not the first time he had been stopped, but it would be the last. His father lives on the hill next door to a former mayor. In spite of the fact the young man had a history of alcohol problems and driving under the influence, the police decided to let him park his vehicle and return for it the next day. The very next evening he crossed the centerline of 101 after leaving a bar. He killled a Portland area resident and himself. The incident was hushed up. Relatives of the victim probably never knew their loved one's life might have been saved in a town where responsible social behavior is more important than daily receipts. People visiting Seaside are not safe. As long as people continue spending money in a morally turpitude town, officials in Seaside will portray the town as a destination for families regardless of the fact this assertion contradicts reality. There are numerous, beautiful, safe destinations on the Oregon Coast that do not take much longer to reach. Say no to violence and Seaside's culture of profit at any cost
