He is a hero to Taiwanese and Americans who like China to remain forever a

He is courageous like the Serb who shot the Archduke Ferdinand to cause
World War I. The Serb was courageous but he ignited the war that spelled the
doom of millions.
That is what Wu is trying to do: destroy the a fast growing economy and
spell the doom of millions of Chinese.
What makes you think that there are a lot of prisoners in China held for
no reasons? Because of what you were told here?
China has the fastest growing economy in the past 10 years. If the Chinese
are only a bunch of coolies (you like that term don't you? makes you feel
superior?) being exploited then the economy would be as stifled as it was
under Mao. People are happy enough there and making money.
I try to buy as much Chinese stuff as possible because most of the stuff are
made in Canton where my relatives are. Mr. Wei, are all those buildings in
Shenzhen, Guandong and Shanghai made by prison labor?

That's like saying the the last 30 of economic growth in Taiwan benefited
only the corrupt officials of the KMT and American in/exporters.
The problem with intellectual like Wu is that he doesn't know nor does
he care about the common Chinese who are benefitting from the growth in
the economy.
The prison labor stuff is just a red herring for 3 reasons: 1. most of
those people are common criminals, 2. prisoners SHOULD work, 3. China's
wages are low enough without needing prisoners to make them any lower
