The Cornell Railroad Historical Society, a chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, will be having a special presentation at the next regular meeting, Sept. 14, at 7:30 pm in 1120 Snee Hall on the Cornell Campus. The meeting is open to the public. Our speaker will be Sheldon King who will talk about the Elmira, Cortland & Northern, otherwise known as "Ezra Cornell's Railroad". Mr. King is a noted upstate rail author who previously presented us with material from his book, "The Route of Phoebe Snow - A Story of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad". Mr. King is reportedly working on a book about the Lehigh Valley Railroad and will talk about the Elmira, Cortland & Northern. This railroad was originally the Ithaca & Cortland, and was fostered and funded to a large extent by Ezra Cornell. It had a junction with the Southern Central at Freeville, and later was extended all the way to Camden, north of Oneida Lake, and to Horseheads, adjacent to Elmira. Never a moneymaker, it nevertheless served Cornell's university for many years and remnants can be found even today. Eat in Coyote Loco and you will be in the former EC&N East Ithaca station! The CRHS meets on the second Tuesday of each month in room 1120 Snee Hall (Geology building). The doors are open by 7:00 pm and the meeting starts at 7:30. Programs range from videos to slide presentations to guest speakers. Meetings are open to the public and we welcome anyone with an interest in railroads, trolleys, model railroads, both modern and historical. -Doug Flanagan President, CRHS
