Your computer will NOT play the sounds you Roland makes, all the MIDI
interface does is give information like:
Note ON
Note OFF
VELOCITY
CONTROLER CHANGE
PATCH CHANE etc.
If you want to get you computer to make "roland sounds" you need to control
the Roland with the computer acting as the sequncer.
Thus, if you want to use a combination of on board MIDI sounds and your
Roland, you can use an external mixer, or plug the analog out (audio out) of
the roland into the line input of the sound card, and use the internal mixer
on the card. This way it mixes both the computers "Audio Out" with the
keyboards "Audio Out"
Think of the SB Live as an "external" sound module that can do:
>>> General MIDI (creative SW synth).
>>> Custom banks of sounds (SoundFonts on Synth A and Synth B).
>>> Programable sampler (make your own soundfonts).
And it just happens to be inside your computer..... and cost alot less.. Its
a powerful tool, Ive got 3 of them..

No! If you want to use the keys on your Roland as an input device, you need
to find the part of your particular software that allows you to choose MIDI
input and MIDI output ports.
Set the midi Input to SB LIVE IN (####)
Set the midi Output to SB LIVE OUT (####)
Mine is set up like this..
Midi In = SB LIVE MIDI in
Midi Out in this order (for cakewalk at least)
LIVE A = Port 1
LIVE B = Port 2
LIVE Synth = Port 3
LIVE MIDI OUT = Port 4
In essence, Ive got 4 sound module's:
>>>The first two are general midi, unless I assign a soundfont to a bank,
which can then be shared between either A or B (no need to load it twice)
and can be drum kits, orchestra sections, pianos, synths, noise, samples..
up to 32 midi channels there..
>>>The third is a general midi only (you cant change the sounds it makes,
just the 127 general midi patches, and a drum kit) 16 midi channels there
>>>The fourth is piped out to my Yamaha AN1x synth (for the really phat
sounds) limited by your board, or up to 16 channels there too...
> 3: Is there a better MIDI software to use with Roland Synthesizers?
Opinions, suggestions?
I'm a firm beleiver in Cakewalk (pro audio 9 is real nice) It does MIDI and
Audio multi-track limited only by your processor and Ram.
