I'm kind of in the same boat, except I have a DXR2. I don't know about the Dxr3, but I like the Dxr2 because I output to the TV...it's kind of tough on these eyes watching a 17 inch monitor from across the room :). At any rate - the Svideo out on the Dxr2 is a lot better than the Svideo out on my GeForce and Power DVD. It's not a terrible picture just not as nice as the Dxr2. The left and right edges seem to be cropped for some reason no matter what mode/aspect ratio I use...and it's almost like there's a pincushioning effect or trapezoid or something on my TV, when I'm using the Svideo out on the Geforce and PowerDVD. Not so with the Dxr2 card. It could be the output chip on the Geforce..it's a Chrontel and I've heard there not as nice as some of the others out there. At any rate...that's a possible reason why he might want to continue using the Dxr3 as opposed to PowerDVD.
