My CD-Rom doesn't seem to be working

I have a Creative 52X CD-Rom and it doesn't want to work, when I put in a CD
it just makes My Computer inaccessible for a few seconds then it ejects the
disk. WHat is wrrong with my CD-Rom,.. can I clean it or something what else
could it be? Im running Windows 2000 with it.
